2013 Moving forward

Moving forward..........

The intention of the theme in 2012 was to allow individuals to develop their work freely from whatever point they were currently at –without constraint but with a light touch framework to work within. It was hoped (and it proved to be the case!) that the theme helped us communicate with each other something about ourselves through our work and our intentions.

Moving forward into 2013 from this starting point we are choosing to work individually over the year on a series of work of our own choosing whether that series be related to a specific theme or process or design approach.

As in 2012 every two months a piece of work will be produced, starting January 2013. Size of the work for 2013 will be A3 (30x42 cm approx or 12x17inches) either portrait or landscape.

Croatian Textiles

Last summer we had a fabulous trip to Croatia. We visited the Ethnographic Museum in Zagreb where there are hundreds of examples of Croatian National Costume on show. I made a study of the patterns and designs and have put them together to make this piece. I have used a block print that i made myself and a thermofax screen that i designed. The fabric is mainly hand dyed wool with stitch using Wonderfil Spagetti thread. I loved using little bits of left over ric rac braid, cowrie shells etc. I havent decided yet whether to make all my 6 pieces based on studies of Ethnic textiles or just based on my travels. The new CQ challenge that is also based on working in a series has made me have to have a rethink! I have a busy few months coming up so i wanted to get ahead!

  1. As usual, Gillian this is a beautiful piece with so much detail; I just want to be able to study it in person to see exactly what you have done. There are so many different patterns, did you screen print all of these?
    It's gorgeous! Elaine.

  2. Hi Elaine
The only bit I screen printed was the top one, the rest is either block printed or machine stitched.
I loved making it - it was such fun cutting the wavy bits and making use of all the things I hoard that I am sure will come in useful one day
