2013 Moving forward

Moving forward..........

The intention of the theme in 2012 was to allow individuals to develop their work freely from whatever point they were currently at –without constraint but with a light touch framework to work within. It was hoped (and it proved to be the case!) that the theme helped us communicate with each other something about ourselves through our work and our intentions.

Moving forward into 2013 from this starting point we are choosing to work individually over the year on a series of work of our own choosing whether that series be related to a specific theme or process or design approach.

As in 2012 every two months a piece of work will be produced, starting January 2013. Size of the work for 2013 will be A3 (30x42 cm approx or 12x17inches) either portrait or landscape.

My First Voyage Quilt - LIMBO

So the theme is Where I Am.  The answer came very quickly for me as did the initial concept. Then it was just a matter of bringing it to life.

Where I Am - LIMBO, that's where I am these days. In just about every aspect of my life...LIMBO. Not in the theological definition. More in the idea of so many things not settled. Everything is up in the air. So that is where I am taking you with this art quilt  - to my state of limbo.

I do feel as though I am barely balanced and no definite (or sometimes even a hint of) direction to go to solve any of these issues. All of them are mostly out of my control.  Others are left to decide my fate. The green verdant background is the beautiful fields of abandon where I long to frolic and play....just almost within reach. The cliff on the left is the sturdiness of knowing at least my immediate future plans. But now...I'm struggling in mid air and always feeling like any day I could plunge into the roiling tumult below me. The solid part on which I can still put my feet is my faith. It is often the only thing that keeps me upright.

So that is my story of Where I Am.

First quilt- India

Hello all,
number 14 of our 10 people group finally reporting in.
I am relishing the challenge of making small quilts....I  usually work in a much larger mode.
I also appreciate the challenge I have set for myself to work in fabric, most of my art quilt career [actually all of it] I have used the interpretation of a quilt "2 or 3 layers of cloth pieced by stitch" very loosely and felted my quilt tops and them stitched back into them.
Trying to think back it is probably 20 years since I have pieced anything....don't look to closely at one corner- it shows!
In the back of my mind for some while I have wanted to explore story clothes or sketching on fabric and a long time ago was really taken by an exhibition I saw in Paducah, USA based on modern interpretations of tradtional blocks.
So I think my offerings are going to be based on my local hand spun, handloom fabrics, possibly some block print, sketching and some reference to traditional blocks.
Attempt number 1
Humara Yaha [Our Place]

Literally where we are, bordered in red for the heart and my camel [in India they say camels are for love and my Baba was a birthday gift from my husband], a log cabin block in the middle [ I read somehwere once that log cabin refers to the home/heart and traditionally has red in the middle- no reference now but like the story] surrounded by layers and boy is life in India a chance to delve into layers of being.

Textile course

I don't know whether study plans are contagious, but I enrolled this weekend with the Open College for the Arts. I am starting with the first course for my BA Hons Textile degree. As far as I know they are the only institute who give this kind of course through distance learning.

School in Canada

I have just received acceptance to the Textile arts progam at the Capalino University, in Vancouver Canada. I am so excited. It will really help my work. No more complaining about not having a sewing machine, or knowing how to do printing etc. It will be fun to see how my work changes. I wondered about taking part in this challenge, now it will be fun to see the growth.
